Scum villain seems to be about popular media authorship. Writing a popular novel requires you to bend to the desires of the masses at the expense of good story telling, and authors will write crap that sells rather than good fiction because they have to eat.
Without the profit motive, many works would have fewer loopholes and be more indicative of the authors need for expression.
Also, the worst haters of a work actually love it, or they would have dropped it long ago.
