❝ I knew that America would never invest the necessary funds or energies in rehabilitation of its poor so long as adventures like Vietnam continued to draw men and skills and money, like some demonic, destructive suction tube. […] it is estimated that we spend $500,000 to kill each enemy soldier, while we spend only fifty-three dollars for each person classified as poor, and much of that fifty-three dollars goes for salaries to people that are not poor.

@blogdiva in 1967 we knew, and King reminded us, that we have the means to end poverty but refuse to do it. This remains true today and i think some have taken the reminder as a call to action, a challenge; to gather everything possible to themselves. To feed us all to the octopus.

❝ "Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence", also referred as Riverside Church speech, is an anti-Vietnam war and pro-social justice speech delivered by Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, 1967. The major speech at Riverside Church in New York, New York, followed several interviews[2] and several other public speeches in which King came out against the war in Vietnam and the policies that created the war.

❝ King claimed that America made “peaceful revolution impossible by refusing to give up the privileges and the pleasures that come from the immense profits of overseas investments” (King, “Beyond Vietnam,” 157). King urged instead “a radical revolution of values” emphasizing love and justice rather than economic nationalism (King, “Beyond Vietnam,” 157).

❝So long as one spark of prejudice lies latent in the heart of any white American, there is a possibility for it to develop into a [strikeout illegible] flame of intolerence at the unpredictable moments.

❝We must not become so complacent that we forget the struggles of other minorities. We must unite with oppressed minorities throughout the world. (Africa & Asia).
