yeah, you can link a single account to multiple devices, and they will sync with each other

Seems to work quite well. In fact if the desktop is always on it should help improve connectivity for all your chats. Else you can run the #jamiDaemon on e.g. a #RaspberryPi
One thing that does not work for me is having a chat with myself, it always shows as 'chat ended'. I really like those self chats for notes or getting files from phone to PC.. Still easier than the otherwise pretty cool #packet https://github.com/nozwock/packet

I have set up a group for myself that I use for reminders of things to do when I'm at the other computer, and for file transfers such as things I want to read while on the other computer.

oh, that's odd. you really mean a group, as in the kind that you could invite a lot of people, but you don't invite anyone else?
I thought you meant something that I got for some time in which I somehow ended up with my own account appearing as a contact. I don't think that was ever supposed to have happened, and I thought you might have hit it, with odd consequences.
anyhow, before there were groups in jami, I set up two accounts, linked them to both devices, and "talked" to myself through them. that much should work even if the single-user group fails for whatever reason.
but I think it should work. maybe it's a bug, probably worth reporting.
