Santa can keep the toys…

What we really want for Christmas: people before algorithms.

RE: https://ec.social-network.europa.eu/@EUCommission/115762325563043978

Oh we have the same wish @EUCommission

I think it'd be a powerful move if you deleted your X account (a platform that has become a vector of misinformation and a cesspool of hate).

By the way, your homepage states: "Follow us on" followed by the icons of Facebook, X and LinkedIn. I always found it odd, since those are algorithm-based U.S. companies and you are the EUROPEAN Commission. How about putting your Mastodon icon on your homepage?

Thank you for your consideration

@_elena @EUCommission I never understood why there are algorithms in social media at all. Why don’t I simply see the posts of people I follow in a chronological order. That makes the perfect social media tool

@_elena @EUCommission this post got (when writing this) 865 stars and 694 boosts, which is very nice. I'd also like us to give the commission credit for posting on Mastodon. 👍

If we want to help them further we can provide feedback and ask for this change at the bottom of their page where it says "give us more feedback". If they get ~1000 comments about removing X and adding Mastodon to the footer, I'm sure it'll help the web team get the greenlight to do it. #LeaveX

@leanderlindahl Did it: "I expect all EU institutions to become independent of US platforms controlled by fascists, which constantly violate European rules. That's why I find it painful when X is still being advertised here under social media! Instead, you have a Mastodon account (a decentralised, algorithm-free, democracy-promoting alternative) and are keeping it secret here! So that no one discovers you there?

Done that. :)

Interesting: they have Mastodon and a lot more other alternatives on other pages covered with the "other share options" ... But not consistently. Main landing page just US based stuff. On the page "Have your say" are 20 possibilities shown, Mastodon at place 19, followed by Bluesky.

Why so inconsistent?

Also ... Another topic: wouldn't it be more interesting to have an "activity pub share" button? Would cover all Fediverse.

@leanderlindahl @_elena I submitted this feedback to the @EUCommission "It is surprising and worrying that the European Commission continues promoting US social media corporations like Meta and X right in the footer of its website. What about promoting your own, European social network account at Mastodon, part of the decentralised Fediverse? A move to a healthy, public values based internet, that safegards our digital autonomy and ultimately our sovereignty is urgent and possible."

Compare this to most UK government and media and they're exclusively posting to the toxic silicon valley usual suspects. At least the EU has a broader range.

@_elena @EUCommission Mastodon is a celebration of European ingenuity, vitality, innovation and resilience. How many other power blocks in the world have their own free, open, federated social media? I count zero.

@_elena @EUCommission there are very few websites with Mastodon icons. Including #theguardian #commonweal #thenational and government petitions. Wonder why that is..

@_elena @EUCommission I add my concern: talking about "people before algorithm" then having your main web page linking American algorithm-based platforms. And yes, I understand the situation about traffic, you might have higher visits in your American social networks but IMHO you should gradually start switching.
Only issue I notice, is that those platforms tend to hide fediverse-related contents.
