#Listening to Marquee Moon, the classic 1977 album by proto-punk band Television;

Television were regulars at the legendary CBGB, famous for being the early stomping grounds of other New York art punk bands who went on to mainstream success, notably Talking Heads and Blondie.

It seems odd to describe any these as punk bands now. The genre has become firmly associated with the Sex Pistols aesthetic of aggressive, minimalist rock and snarling, political vocals.

But in the late 1970s and early 80s, Never Mind the Bollox was just just one take on punk. The genre was as diverse as "alternative rock" in the late 1990s, which included everything from grunge, to funk metal, to the lofi of Ween, or the mutant hip hop Beck was releasing at the time.

TBH if I had to put Marquee Moon in a genre bucket, based on contemporary musical sensibilities, I would file it as psychedelic rather than punk. Participants because of the length of some of the songs, the free form arrangements, and the way the album seems to fold back in on itself towards the end.

Every generation probably experiences something like this, but ...

It blows my mind that for people who are having their teenage years in the 2020s, the 1970s are as long ago as the 1940s were during most of my teenage years in the 1990s.

We were into 60s/70s retro for sure. I remember listening to a lot of The Doors, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, Bowie, and of course The Beatles. But 40s? Maybe for the artier end of the electronic crowd who were sampling classic Blue Note jazz?

@strypey 40s music (and even 30s) could still chart in the 1980s:
