Strong Atmospheric River Brings Heavy Rain, Snow, and Wind to California Through Friday Key Messages for California Atmospheric River
Weather Prediction Center
College Park, Maryland ●Widespread Rainfall
Heavy precipitation with significant impacts is expected across
California through Friday as an atmospheric river meanders
over the state followed by coastal low pressure. The heaviest
rain is forecast tonight through Wednesday with additional
rounds expected then through Friday.
●High Risk of Flash Flooding Wednesday
Particularly heavy rainfall late tonight through Wednesday will
cause life-threatening flash flooding, along with landslides,
rockfalls, and/or mudslides, particularly for Transverse Range,
including the San Bernardino, San Gabriel, and Sierra Madre
Mountains. Urban flooding in the greater Los Angeles metro
area is likely.
●High-Elevation Snow Through Friday
Prolonged heavy snow for the Sierra Nevada tonight through
Friday with lowering snow levels will make travel increasingly
difficult to impossible over the passes due to snow and strong
winds. Several feet of heavy wet snow may also cause snow
load impacts.
●Strong Winds Through Thursday
Windy conditions are expected across the region through
Thursday, especially in the mountains and coastal areas where
tree damage and power outages are likely along with difficult
travel, especially for high-profile vehicles. Issued: Tue, Dec 23, 2025
