President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy beside the official White House Christmas tree. This moment is significant as it shows the beginning of the tradition of themed Christmas trees at the White House. The photo was taken on December 13, 1961, in the Blue Room of the White House.

Jacqueline Kennedy started the tradition of selecting a theme for the official Christmas tree, with 1961 theme being the "Nutcracker Suite" ballet.

The tree was adorned with ornaments like gingerbread cookies, small toys, wrapped packages, and straw ornaments made by disabled or senior citizen craftsmen across the United States. The tradition of a White House Christmas tree began in 1853 with President Franklin Pierce.
