On December 24, 1968, astronaut William Anders was photographing the surface of the moon from aboard the Apollo 8 lunar orbiter when he suddenly noticed something amazing. “Oh my God!” he exclaimed. “There’s the earth coming up! Wow, that’s pretty!” And then he turned his camera to the scene and took one of history’s most stunning and iconic photographs.

The photograph which came to be called “Earthrise” showed the earth as humans had never before seen it...

This incredible photograph from 1885 AD, of Anandibai Joshi of India, Keiko Okami of Japan, and Sabat Islambouli of Syria, who each became the first licensed female doctors in their respective countries. The three were students at the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania; one of the only places in the world at the time where women could study medicine.

On Christmas Eve 1971, 17-year-old Juliane Koepcke was blown from a disintegrating plane after a lightning strike sent it crashing into the Peruvian rainforest. Against all odds, she survived a two-mile fall still strapped to her seat.

Injured and alone, Koepcke spent 11 days navigating the dense Amazon jungle before she was finally rescued. She was the only person to make it out alive—91 others, including her mother, perished in the crash.

Randall Champion was already dead when this photo was taken. He had been electrocuted while working on a utility pole in 1967, his heart stopped mid-shift. His colleague J.D. Thompson, without hesitation, climbed up and gave him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while both were still strapped to the pole.

The image, later dubbed “The Kiss of Life,” captured a moment of pure instinct and heroism. Champion survived the incident and lived for nearly 40 more years.
