Oh, muhgod. Haven't finished e3, & they just pulled out •another• hoary old trope to pile onto the heap.
This thing doesn't even have enough story to stitch together an hour's worth of scrambled cliches 🤦 😩
Oh god. Now they're trying to do "hard boiled" noir. Except it's obvious nobody involved has ever...studied the form? Or even has any interest in or affection for it? Or maybe they're basing their version on the TNG version? Instead of going back to the source...?
God this is painful....
s3e5 is actually a #DoctorWho ep in #StarTrek cosplay.
I can work with this. Except I hate plots that are driven by the characters making stupid decisions. Esp when the characters are supposed to be top-of-their-field professionals.
This so •could• have been competence porn....
Fuuuuu——
They can't even f'ing English—
It's synchrony, NOT "synchronicity"!
I •want• to like it—I wanted to so bad—
s2 had two episodes I couldn't watch, & the rest ranged from pretty good to good.
This season, the ratio seems...reversed??
Jessie absolutely nails my complaints with this review.
Jessie keeps asking: "What the hell happened!?" >
Looking at Wikipedia, as far as I can tell, it's mostly the same writers room.
My suspicion: These episodes feel so slap-dash that I have to wonder if they had the season written, & then Trump came into office, & talk of the Skydance merger started circulating, & studio fiat forced them to dump everything they'd done & start from scratch in no time flat, •and• had to abandon any thoughtful nuance because "too woke." >
@cavyherd ... if that's the episode I am thinking of, I seriously kept expecting someone to bust out singing, or dancing (except, they already did that episode).
It was very.. Stage Play, with a sprinkle of British Panto, and really didn't have the Audience Participation for the latter.
My read was that the episode writer was a big fan of Picard's Detective Whatsisname Holodeck programs, & just wanted to Do That some more. I skipped most of the episode, & I'm not a fan of the genre, so there may have been more going on that I missed. But, yeah, to @OrionKidder 's point above, very Drama Geeks "Let's Put On A Play!" vibe throughout the season.
@cavyherd It's sadly very hit-and-miss. When it hits, the show is really charming, like they let the theatre kids loose. When it's a miss, it's pretty cringe, like they let the theatre kids loose.
Yeah, that's my impression so far.
It's fascinating that it's even •more• uneven this season than last. & it's pretty clear that the writing staff has only tertiary experience with SF: the lazy Tropes are strong with this one. 🤦
(I'm also kind of appalled at the quality of the costuming & hair. Like, wtf? Can't they get any actual pros anymore? (Or, more likely, just not willing to pay for experience.) (I noticed the same with Guilded Age. Painful to look at.)
@cavyherd I hate that I agree with you. There's one ep in S3 that's just a bland D&D game. It doesn't feel like they're doing STAR TREK about a third of the time.
& wtf with #1's hair in e3?? Like...who the hell thought •that• was a good idea???
@cavyherd There's one really bad hair episode for her, and I heard the explanation that there's a zero-G scene, and animating hair is *expensive*.
Hm. That's a sound production reason. But the execution is...just spectacularly bad. (Dunno yet if it's the same ep.) They couldn't just, oh I dunno, just spitballing here—put it in a •bun?•
What they wound up with makes her look like she's wearing a wig. Or maybe a weird hat. It's just—👀
