Went for a little bike ride, which was probably a mistake because I hadn't appreciated just what a number the flu had done on my fitness and those hills nearly killed me, and I didn't really enjoy stopping to blow my nose every five metres. I also had crusted, dried cat sick on my hi vis and didn't notice until about mile 2, by which point it was a bit late to do anything about that. But!

The roads were really empty and as I was whizzing along a sparrowhawk took off from a fence on my left and followed me overhead for a bit before alighting in a tree on my right. I don't know if it was trying to figure out what manner of thing I was, or was hoping I was going to run over a rabbit or something, but it felt like we were racing. The whole experience felt quite magical.

@afewbugs I often wonder if playfulness has been misinterpreted as menace when I ride along this particular stretch of road.

@afewbugs Birds like to play, just like us mammals.

@LillyHerself they absolutely do, I once saw a flock of crows deliberately flying into a head wind and getting flipped over. I wish I'd managed to film that too

This is actually the first time I think I've ever wished I had a helmet cam for a positive reason

@afewbugs it was probably hoping you'd scare a small bird into flight. (Even sparrowhawks gotta eat)

@capnthommo that makes sense! I did actually scare a goldcrest into flight, but that was by pulling over next to the hedge it was in to blow my nose 😂

@afewbugs We have a hawk in our neighborhood that will follow us from above as we go on our morning walk. Haven’t seen it catch a ground-squirrel or rabbit yet, but the way it follows us, I expect it’s had some success in the past. Fun to watch it in any case.

On reflection it might have been after the cat sick. Still magic though
