A few big cycling goals -
Being inspired by Thomas not a bikenite tooter but a fediverse biking stalwart - gonna try to hit the bike everyday without fail and clock up some serious miles. Might go for 10,000 miles but it's 5 years since I have managed that consistency.
I am going to bike pack the Via rhona the path from the formation of the Rhone in Switzerland to the Mediterranean in Marseille.
doing London to Paris with some newbies which will be fun
@ascentale @geonz @bikenite A4. A huge goal is replacing my recumbent. Cost is a stumbling block, but so is simply finding a company that will ship here and finding insurance. Haven't gotten all the ducks in a row yet, but hopefully by late Jan. Still haven't covered it, so if folks want to help, buy my music with a "tip" meganlynch.bandcamp.com or https://paypal.me/plantedu #BikeNite
@ascentale @geonz @bikenite A4. cont'd In a world that feels like I'm surrounded by hot lava, my goal is to find the next cool rock to hop to as soon as I can. And to somehow make time to do the things I promised myself for years I would get better about doing - doing art daily, writing songs again, singing, trying to enjoy the now more despite all the genuine reasons to be worrying. #BikeNite
@ascentale @geonz @bikenite A4. I will definitely go on a few multi-day bike tours through Germany next year. But my biggest dream is to ride through Italy by bike.
I love being in Italy, but I've never been there by bike. Maybe next year? I already host a German-language forum for cyclists who love to travel Italy to get tipps and inspiration. Join for free if you like: https://forum-italia.de

@etp @ascentale @geonz @bikenite
I am gonna do the Rhone so maybe together we'll get the Rhine Rhone set!
@etp @ascentale @geonz @bikenite Bike roads along river Rhine are generally safe to go, but most of the time in parallel with noisy car lanes. If it is Germany you want to ride, I'd rather recommend other, smaller rivers, e.g. from Wetzlar to Koblenz, always close to small river Lahn.
Also, take a look at https://www.bahntrassenradwege.de These are very nice bike tracks that used to be train tracks. Few inclines, journeys through railway tunnels and idyllic landscapes, far away from traffic noise.
@realSiegfried @ascentale @geonz @bikenite
Thanks for the link. Maybe that would be better. I've never really investigated cycling the Rhine, it has just always been an idea in my head. And if you want to do Italy, riding the Po valley from near Turin to the delta is supposed to be great. I have done a short stretch.
@etp @ascentale @geonz @bikenite Been to Torino twice. Love the city, Lingotto, etc... Have been to Monferrato too. Beautiful area. Novara, ... The Po River sounds great, but more in spring than in summer, because of so many mosquitos?
@ascentale @geonz @bikenite #BikeNite A4. My speculation for 2026 is that we are going to see a lot more efforts to severely restrict ebikes in the US, because of the safety hysteria that currently surrounds them, and because the regime in power loathes any alternative to cars burning more fossil fuels.
My goals + hopes for 2026 are to acquire a 2nd ebike, so I can have one for Winter, one for Summer, and at least one new conventional bicycle, ideally two. One casual, one fitness.
@ascentale @geonz @bikenite #BikeNite A4. Be prepared for the worse, but hope for the best. (in everything).
@ascentale @geonz @bikenite #bikenite A4: Yeah, finally actually get a bikepacking overnighter in! Also just for the hell of it I'd like to do a 100mi / 160km day, it's quite hilly around here so I'm thinking of heading inland to Murray River country where there's less vertical in 100km than there is 100m from my house 😄 eg: maybe https://nix-tracks.com/earth-rivers-and-ironbark/
@ascentale @geonz @bikenite A4 #bikeNite as I'm only 5 months back into cycling and I like to track stats (they motivate me) I'm expecting to improve my monthly and yearly stats.
I have a goal of riding to the near end of the bike path I live near by the end of the year. It's ~70km return. My previous record distance in one day is 55km, and that was a decade ago.
Also hoping to connect up my squadrat yards so my current home is in them all.
@ascentale @geonz @bikenite A4. Missed out on doing an audax ride this year, but I do want to take a weekend or something to do a long ride down the Silver Comet Trail sometime next year when I can get away for a bit. Can't wait for daycare to be closer to home again as well.
A4. my goal is to achieve more distances, facing my fears with cars on avenues where there's no cycling at all.. now in average I achieve around 15 km, and I'd like to achieve at least 20 o 25 km, considering that I ride on a hilly zone where climbs are steep and very frequent.
@ascentale @geonz @bikenite A4. I’m hoping to cycle more consistently through the winter. I still bike commuted last winter, but I don’t go into my office every day. I don’t feel like I did as much riding for fun in January/February as I’d like to do. #BikeNite
Q4: I've got a series of personal and "professional" goals that are rather entwined that I am hoping to make good progress on in the next year.
The cargo bike build I've been talking about for the past forever is likely to get wrapped up before the halfway point of January. I'll be building the whole thing in my bedroom, so it represents a significant amount of tooling up in addition to the components themselves (and this particular bike is itself a tool!), and I'm hoping to springboard off of that into working on stuff for friends, family, and hopefully time bank and skill share stuff.
Then I'll be using the cargo bike to start carting materials for my nascent woodworking/tinkering/home improvement task list that has started growing.
I also have two big events I'm hoping to plan rides to, starting with the Philly Bike Expo in March and the MOFGA Common Ground Country Fair in September. I've never been very good about taking and planning time away for myself, whether for rest or adventure, so this is kind of a big deal for me, and I hope I don't drop the ball on either of them!
A4. My main goal is to finish my teenage daughter's "new" bike (with her, so she learns how it fits together), and then ride with her and my son on a decent length (30mile) ride to the seaside for ice-creams on Shoreham beach!
@Pionir @ascentale @geonz @bikenite
[waves from the North Shore Rail Trail]
@cptbutton @ascentale @geonz @bikenite
Hi! I actually meant the original Shoreham. Well, Shoreham-by-sea in the UK.
This is the route if you're ever in the UK: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downs_Link
@ascentale @geonz @bikenite A4. I am registered for 2 events so far- #RaceForTheCure in April (just a 5K run) and #24HoursOfBooty in Charlotte. I'd like to aim for at least a century ride, but weather will determine that (last year in a record heat wave I managed 70). I hope for another #BikeVirginia event but if not I'll be looking for another tour experience. Also I'd like for @crescent_latte and I to ride rhe Virginia Creeper Trail (the part that still exists anyway). #bikenite
@ascentale @geonz @bikenite A4 - If car should break (12yo, it just may), I think I'll buy a long-tail cargo bike instead of a new car. The Orox is top of my list, in the 27.5/fat version.
@ascentale @geonz @bikenite
#bikenite A4:
For 2026 I have a bike tour in Europe planned, and I hope to ride 8000 miles for the year.
@MartyCormack @ascentale @geonz @bikenite
If you are around London I am sure we can get enought #bikenite regulars for a quick ride!
@ascentale @geonz @bikenite A4: I want to tackle a bike trip. There are plenty of options to choose from, I need to pick a month and commit to it.
My town is a few steps closer to building a rail trail on abandoned train tracks, so that’s good, but I’m personally more interested in making some of our town’s roads safer for bikes. Protected lanes would be awesome, but I’d be happy with a couple one-way streets with parking on only one side, and bikes on the other.
@ascentale @geonz @bikenite A4: fukkit i'll say it
my big hope for the next year is that we keep enough of a republic to have reasonable free and fair elections
that's about as much as i can hope for
@ascentale @geonz @bikenite A4) New passport for myself and perhaps the children. #BikeNite
