@cavyherd I’m sorry, that sounds even worse than the soup ads but I somehow avoided that. @poetaster @cstross

@cavyherd yeah, I switched from Jules Verne as a small kid into the Heyne Star Trek novels in the late eighties. Those would have two-page ads for instant soup vaguely connected to the story „… I bet our heroes caught in the blizzard would love a cup of hot tomato soup right now…“
I think at that time tobacco ads were relegated to the weekly pulps like Perry Rhodan, John Sinclair or Butler Parker
@poetaster @cstross
Wow. Sounds like the soup ads at least involved a conversation with the publisher/editor?
The cig ads were no more customized that the newspapers weekly mailers were targeted to specific subscribers.
(I think I was also poor during that time, & wasn't buying many books. Also on the road & had enough crap to move.)
(The timeframe I'm remembering may well have been '60-'70s, also.)
@cavyherd
Well "a conversation" might have happened at some point, but I learned years later that authors weren't involved in this.
Here's the ad from the translation of Diane Duane's "The Romulan Way"
(IIRC she had a post about it on tumblr somewhere stating that she didn't know about this at the time).
Oh! Like a product placement in a TV show. Goodness, that's entirely different (& honestly, while still obnoxious, far less obnoxious) than the ad inserts I encountered, back in the day.
Don't know if publishers here took advertising of that sort; if they did, it was subtle enough that I didn't notice. (But then, I wasn't a very discriminating reader for that sort of thing.)
