All the people who were critical of not publishing paperzzz while I was simultaneously settling a family in to a whole new culture and language, doing and planning fieldwork, working on other people's papers, doing work to set up new equipment, teaching people field and lab methods on a 2.5 year contract and also looking for the next thing (fuck, still going).
....still haven't published anything or visibly progressed collaborations. More than the whole contract length later...

...someone asked me recently "why is the time from fieldwork to publication so long?" (often 5+ years).
The answer, in geographies and geophysics of sea ice, is that it is still a baby science. Unlike oceanography - thousands and thousands of people, long established methods - its a super small community making things up as we go in a complex system.
Sure, we *could* do a paper mill based on a few ice cores here and there and some satellite images - if we wanted to be misleading... 😬🙃
