The saga continues...
"""
This action also does not automatically mean you’re banned from using Stripe services elsewhere, as Stripe makes those determinations independently.
"""
But they determined that what I do on *my own social media* is too spicy for them to process money that my friends gave me for totally non-nsfw reasons...on a platform that they don't have anything to do with.
Color me skeptical of Stripe's future good graces.
This all feels like it's designed to shame sexworkers and push them even farther into the margins (and I'm not even a sex-worker! My crime was looking femme and posting photos of myself that you'd find in any Victoria's Secret storefront—on Fedi...for free).
Meanwhile, these payment platforms seem to happily process money for far-right influencers and (other) hate groups.
@alice uhhhh did they ever answer your question about the revenge porn? As pissed off as I am about what we know for sure, I'm even more concerned about that because at least you consented to those pictures being posted and it's terrifying to think that someone might be not allowed to receive money for their labor just because someone else violated their consent
@raphaelmorgan of course not, because that would complicate things for them.
@alice please forgive my potential ignorance, but what's up with 'folx'? Is this some inclusivity thing I just never saw before or "just you"?
@DJGummikuh it's a specifically inclusive gender-neutral group noun without the old-timey or LooneyToons connotations of "folks".
@alice I see. Never considered 'folks' to be problematic to be honest. Learn something new every day!
@DJGummikuh oh yeah, I don't think "folks" is problematic. It's just that "folx" is explicitly inclusive.
@alice @DJGummikuh This is all new to me. I grew up in a region that rarely used the word “folks”. Where I live now I hear it all the time and it still sounds weird to my ear.
Anyway, I looked around for some context and found this comment on a discussion board: https://www.asexuality.org/en/topic/176097-folx-vs-folks/?do=findComment&comment=1063323172
@alice I just looked at Stripe's Wikipedia page, and found, among other things, this gem:
"In May 2011, Stripe received a $2 million investment from venture capitalists Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, Sequoia Capital, SV Angel, and Andreessen Horowitz."
So from early on it was backed by #PeterSteal and #ElonTheFelon. Gangsters.
@alice this linking together of *totally unrelated* things is fucking scary
@akamran fun fact, their ToS explicitly states no images that show "labia" or "anuses", but doesn't mention penis.
Funner fact: I've never shown my labia or anus online, but I have shown a dildo, which is penis-shaped.
Again though—none of that was on their platform, nor have I ever solicited donations related to anything NSFW. Though I have linked to the BMAC platform from my Fedi profile (because that's kinda how tipping platforms work), so it is possible to associate my nude photography with BMAC if you click a few links and look for it (again, *not* on their platform).
@alice The situation is disgusting and I am aware of some sex worker friends who have had problems with payment processors and can no longer make a living. Here in Sweden they even stop people being paid for cam work etc if it is deemed "porn" by the powers that be.
Yet as you say hate speech, racism, sexism etc is all monetised.
Also, just to put it put there, #SexWorkIsWork, there's no shame in it*, an no, I won't tone myself down or hide myself away to appease puritanical bullshit people.
*yes, there are a lot of issues surrounding sex-work, and yes, *all* those issues exist "because patriarchy".
@alice The Temples of Aphrodite/Venus were in place to provide a service. Overcoming sexual inadequacy, variations on the theme of relief, or simply letting off steam. These ancient institutions were the norm. They should still be so! Sex work has historical precedent!
@alice
Dominant Patriarchy, dominant matriarchy, either or are dominant ,
Madonna, Christ on a cross
I heard there was an older prosocial system apparently🤔.
It had to do with partners and linking.
Would have to find a culture expert I guess. Socio anthropology. I’m not sure humans have the capacity to govern?
@alice I "love" how technology companies basically figured out that they could invent their own crimes and punish people for them, without any recourse or appeal that's meaningful ~Chara
@alice My friend ran into the same issue with them.
@ninetiger they've said they'll refund all my supporters in a month. A fucking *month*.
@alice I don't mind the wait, but I just don't believe them. My friend had just started, so she only had 2 supporters. She got the impression from the company that she needed more supporters before even considering putting up a page. Left a bad taste in all our mouths, but I certainly don't blame my friend. If my monry is not returned by the company as promised, I will file a consumer complaint. It should not take a month.
@alice GoFundMe took hundreds away from my past immediate dentures fundraiser. I stopped using them after that. It was over $200 that they skimmed from all my funds raised. Sharp learning lesson.
@PhoenixSerenity fuck! Fees like that should be *so* illegal. They profit off of the money in your account, *and* take a big cut.
@alice Yup. I didn't know til trying to transfer funds to bank account. Total ripoff.
@alice Can supporters be refunded earlier, if they request chargeback from their bank? Any consequences for them for requesting the chargeback?
