Wow. I just watched "Network" for the first time with my son who is a bit obsessed with watching classic movies. It's kind of prescient; everything the main character ranted about in 1976 was true then and much more true now. And I honestly have no idea how a big budget movie so damning of the entertainment industry ever got made… by the entertainment industry.

i think it's up there as a must watch to understand where the current torment nexus comes from, in that it predates reality tv.

@jik It's worth remembering that, at the time, movie companies were movie companies and TV networks were TV networks. CNN wasn't on the air yet, and it wasn't until the 90s that major networks and movie studios started consolidating.

Also, I found the callousness and casualness with which the movie portrayed two of its characters entering into an extramarital affair to be rather abhorrent. The man cheating on his wife of 25 years was a sympathetic character. We were supposed to like him. Am I just an old-fashioned prude for being grossed out by this? I dunno, I think adultery is a fatal character flaw; am I just a silly old fool?
