Our company X account was suspended without explanation today. We filed an appeal but I am not holding my breath. Debating if we should create an account for the company here. Do #WordPress and #a11y folks follow companies and is maintaining a company Mastodon account worth it?

@amberhinds You have on Mastodon a lot of followers that you do not see, because to get your messages they actually do not need to follow you. This is also a big underestimated opportunity.
However, you need to adapt your social media strategy to leverage this.

@jornfranke I care less about the follower count than actual true engagement - comments, link clicks, webinar registration. If they aren't doing those things, then it makes the platform feel like it's not working.

@amberhinds Worth it - definitely... some numbers: https://fedidb.com/

The fediverse might dwarf Meta and others right now, but I think long term, things could become really interesting, because the Fediverse will continue to grow as long as people are willing to have conversations, add servers, etc. (I don't think growth numbers are a proper measurement for success btw, I'm more into the happiness factor, but all things considered...)

You can install the ActivityPub plugin in your Wordpress and start posting to Fediverse instances today

(I sound like a salesman, but that's because I'm so excited about this)

@amberhinds Wondering why you still were on that [censored word] of X! I have no doubt about it, they suspend accounts which talk about topics they don't like and IMHO #accessibility is one of those. As soon as MUSKET acquired Twitter, accessibility team was the first he fired.
So, yes, you should create a Fediverse account for the company. Choose the instance carefully though, I'd not suggest MastodonSocial, as your messages then would get lost in the noise.

@amberhinds it may also depend on your company ethos. For me, it is a signal in itself to have @OpenByDefault on the Fediverse.

@amberhinds @WeirdWriter I think it definitely is. Heck it's not like it'd even cost anything.

@amberhinds

Absolutely. In due course the company should also consider establishing your own Mastodon instance.

@mastodonmigration what's the argument for setting up our own instance (aside from data ownership) and how do you rank the setup and maintenance time for that relative to everything else a business needs to do?

@amberhinds @mastodonmigration i have been running an instance for a couple of years now. Close to a hundred users, but of course far less active. The work needed to keep it going and up to date is close to nothing. When there is a new version, like once a month, I log in to the server, update the docker images, restart them, and that is it.
So yes, create your own instance! 🙂

@amberhinds It’s been completely worth it for us and we’ve never looked back. Musk made that decision relatively easy however. Mastodon is filled with thoughtful, engaged, tech-savvy users, it’s a great social home for modern businesses IOHO. 🖖

@WeirdWriter that makes me wonder if I should add an RSS link to our social profiles section on our website like we used to. Or do you think it's safe to assume our audience knows how to find our RSS feed?

@amberhinds Always make it easier for people to follow you, not harder, so I would say add an RSS link. RSS is not dead. Far from it.

Don't listen to them. Someone wrote a dozen bots which won't shut up about RSS.
