@flockofnazguls same. I run Debian on my laptop, and as soon as I have a day to make the change, I will be back to it on my music computer as well. Ubuntu Studio has some nice things about it, but it's still got the same old Ubuntu problems.

@alisynthesis @rich I really should. I've been distro hopping forever, but never really gave Debian a fair shake.

For now I managed to get EOS installed OK - let's see if it meets my exacting standards (i.e., a little stability). :D

@flockofnazguls yeah no sense in buying trouble!

I don't know why Debian isn't considered a sexy and cool distro, but its whole modus operandi is being stable. (I think I just answered my own question there.) so it might be worth a try if you need to try something else!

@alisynthesis @rich Wasn't there some incident involving one of the distro founders a while back? Not sure if that had any impact one way or the other in terms of uptake. Seems to be largely forgotten now.

@flockofnazguls I didn't hear about that. Debian has been around a very long time though, so I can't imagine that would be a huge factor unless the founder was a close friend of Elon Musk or something 🤣

@alisynthesis @flockofnazguls
Before social media became such a time sink, I used to read the weekly Debian Project newsletter email, every week, on the day it dropped.
Obituaries for deceased maintainers (and other contributors) were regular.

They are all remembed on one page here:

@dec23k I really appreciate your sharing this. I have an immense amount of respect for the people who build open source software and especially Debian. RIP and thank you to all of those people.

@alisynthesis @flockofnazguls He committed suicide in 2015. Pretty tragic.

@flockofnazguls I'm running an Ubuntu system right now for Reasons (TM) and I totally freaking regret it. But having been mostly on Debian-based systems, Arch confuses the shit out of me. 🤣

I've never had those same instability problems with Debian though.

@alisynthesis @rich I always have those problems when adding 3rd party repositories. Eventually something collides or otherwise derails.

@alisynthesis @rich Exactly. Hopefully these #Arch distros are audio-production-friendly!

@alisynthesis @rich So setting it up is ridiculously simple. From a terminal:

sudo pacman -S pro-audio

this should also install realtime-privileges, which is needed for low latency.

As for Bitwig, I used the AUR repository:

yay -S bitwig-studio

Prior to that I downloaded the *.deb from Bitwig, but I'm not sure if that part was really necessary, judging from the text output whizzing by during the install.
