I have been thinking about leaving the image-based (atomic/immutable) world and going with Ubuntu or Mint to easily get a signed kernel with the proprietary Nvidia driver.

But since #Bluefin and Bluefin LTS for AMD/Intel run so well, presumably b/c this 9-year-old laptop has a good-enough Intel GPU, I might be able to stick with the kinds of systems I've been running for the past few years, which include #Aeon Desktop and #Fedora #Silverblue and #Kinoite.

@passthejoe

I ran a MacPro 5,1 with a variety of NVIDIA GPU's.

Ended-up, literally, putting them in the bin out of frustration.

NVIDIA can go jump as far as I'm concerned. They have been screwing Linux users for years and have zero interest in FOSS.

My advice, find an alternative GPU, NOT Linux distro...

@avoca Since it's a laptop with an Intel CPU, I'm able to lean on the Intel GPU, and it runs better than my previous all-Intel laptop.

@passthejoe You can really blame Nvidia for this. They are the ones who are stopping support for older NVidia cards. I have several that lost support recently.

I'm looking more and more at AMD. I'm tired of all the kernel module blob stuff.

But Aurora, Bluefin, Bazzite and uCore are great!

@passthejoe Yea, I use a 3060ti 12GB at home, and if it wasn't for using ollama I'd be on AMD. I think AMD support is better now (wasn't when I bought it). I'd definitely go that way. Intel ARC maybe, but thats also not as well supported as NVIDIA.

@passthejoe I would so like to be able to buy a new laptop that was without any OS on it. Hate giving Microsoft any money, directly or indirectly by being force to "purchase" it with a new computer.
