Massive list of protest events this weekend, all of which appeared in the last day due to the shooting in Minneapolis. Lots locally in my area, too. I think people are angry and frustrated, and so far the 1st Amendment still applies here... So people are willing to show their anger and frustration.

@ai6yr
It looks like the web site requires folks to sign in/register with personal info to get details on events. 🤨

I've read numerous warnings about *not* registering for a protest. Seems like sage advice to me.

Just be aware you WILL be tracked by license plate readers and/or other means, if you are concerned about it. There are multiple Flock cameras at the most popular protest site in our area, undoubtedly aimed at the protest and at license plates of people attending the protest.

A massive cache of Flock lookups collated by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) shows as many as 50 federal, state, and local agencies used Flock during protests over the last year.

Here's our most popular protest corner (Thousand Oaks, California ) - corner of Lynn Road and West Hillcrest Drive.

If you come in from Moorpark Road you pass no less than 7 ALPR readers. Anyone getting off at the freeway there gets tagged. The cameras there have a direct view to the protest site approaches. (it's legal to protest, right now, but just be aware a Federal agency can likely use data from the ALPR database to pull up the full list of cars driving past those points, if they really wanted to).

@ai6yr this is just one reason why it's a good idea to drive past protests even if you can't go that day

1) take public transportation as much as possible
2) Pay Cash in the area
3) 2 words: Burner Phone
4) Do not go alone and have a buddy
5) Do not allow yourself to fall behind police lines
6) know your rights: https://www.aclu.org/know-your-rights/protesters-rights
7) Have a designated rally point if you get separated
8) When they start firing the tear gas, bail

The First Amendment protects your right to assemble and express your views through protest. However, police and other government officials are allowed to place certain narrow restrictions on the exercise of speech rights. Make sure you’re prepared by brushing up on your rights before heading out into the streets.

The EFF's biggest recommendation is to turn off biometric identification and require a pin to access your phone.

Putting the phone into flight mode can help limit a lot of types of surveillance.
