As Brian Bennett noted over ten years ago, a report by law enforcement experts found that "Border Patrol agents have deliberately stepped in the path of cars apparently to justify shooting at the drivers and have fired in frustration at people throwing rocks from the Mexican side of the border, according to an independent review of 67 cases that resulted in 19 deaths."

The Trump administration is also using ICE and the National Guard to project power, to demonstrate that it can operate without restraint, and in defiance of the law.

"All of the people who've been killed by ICE, I have a whole long list of them, 37 people just in 2025. These are all horrific cases. Most of them are either Black, Brown, or Asian. But in this case, there's something about the fact that the right has built a narrative around white women being the ones being protected, that mass deportation is designed to protect white women."

"And then this police officer in a white suburb of a nice neighborhood, not on some mean street, not in some dangerous, in a suburb. shooting this woman in the face while her neighbors are watching and while he and other officers are filming it on their cameras, not even body cam, and essentially saying this white woman is a quote unquote dumb bitch and I can kill her at will. Something about that to me is just different."
