“Microsoft chief Satya Nadella warns Thing People Don’t Want boom could falter if people continue not to want it”

Who wants to be the one to explain markets to the head of a multi-trillion dollar company? Is he just used to people not wanting Windows and it selling anyway?

@gknauss It's been so long since MS has had to actually work to get customers rather than just overwhelming everyone into compliance, they don't even know how anymore.

@gknauss language models *can* provide value, particularly when locally run in tailored, specific applications. The issue these CEOs are colliding up against is the late stage capitalistic need to coerce everyone to use LLMs in every part of our lives. At the end of the day, LLMs are a fairly niche product. We will continue to see this dynamic happen with every small iterative improvement in technology. The shareholder class cannot persist using the previous tech industry business model of development being driven organically by user growth. They have to mandate how we use the technology itself. This is why Varoufakis and others refer to this developing coercive dynamic as technofeudalism. We are not seen as the customers now. They are attempting to indenture us. I believe they will fail. But they can do a lot of societal and long-term economic damage in their attempt to institute this system.

A still from an old _Doctor Who_ episode, showing Davros (creator of the Daleks) in a pose somewhat reminiscent of Nadella's in the image in the parent post.

@gknauss As a QA lab tech at a juice bottling plant, I discovered that 5,500 gallons of OJ were contaminated because the silo wasn’t rinsed before the tanker was transferred. It tasted horribly of bleach.

Instead of admitting the mistake to the customer, management diluted it with more tankers of the customer’s juice until they could just barely choke it down in the board room.

Over 50,000 gallons shipped to stores and were then recalled because there wasn’t wide adoption for bleachy juice.
