Call it what you will, this is a surrender.

For all intents and purposes, the meeting between DT and the NATO chief did in fact cede something: parcels of Greenland for the U.S. to expand its military presence and put its lust for minerals to work. For NATO, this is about countering Russia and China, which, taken separately, is a smart move. For DT, it's about acquiring Greenland, which means that he got what he wanted and he's going to hit the EU on the head with it - repeatedly. Let's hope Denmark signed off on that.

Does that sound sane to you? You're giving a jaded military power that's threatening to swallow Greenland your trust and the run of the island? And you're sure it's not going to do with it what it did in Venezuela? Concessions embolden DT. He sees them as a weakness and a sign that he can get whatever he wants.

DT: "We’re getting everything we wanted — total security, total access to everything.”

"The U.S. official said they want to ensure access to Greenland will last 'forever' and 'for infinity'."

Here's what we know about Trump's 'framework' of a Greenland deal

Even though President Donald Trump announced he had reached a "framework" of a deal with NATO over Greenland's future, he continues to be light on details.

President Donald Trump said in a speech at Davos that the U.S. must have Greenland. He leaves without ownership but having shaken his country's alliance with Europe, experts say.

What are the details of Trump's new Greenland 'deal'? And why did he back down from acquiring the whole Arctic island?

"We're going to have total access to Greenland," the president said on Thursday. "We'll have all the military access that we want."

The Europeans simply do not understand what they're up against in #Trump

Trump is a pathological liar

#MarkRutte in particular is completely in over his head, and completely out of his league

It's way past time these sober European "adults" wake up and see #Trump for what he really is and has always been, and act accordingly

Trump will simply lie and claim repeatedly that he got everything he demanded from Rutte in Greenland

Rutte will smile weakly and look contrite and continue with his appeasement

@FinchHaven @NBCNews @abcnews The writing was on the wall yesterday. Something gave; and it was Europe. This was a concession that Europe won't be able to hide from. It basically throws Greenland under the bus, the same way Gaza was thrown under the bus. From DT's vantage point, Europe will be seen (still) as weak, and he will demand even more, and that's assuming he doesn't do there what he did in Venezuela.

I'm shocked the Europeans still seem to think they can trust the U.S.

Absolutely

I see a lot of random European commentary here on Mastodon about Trump and US politics and the majority of Europeans seem to have no understanding of the historical realities of US politics or anything about what Donald Trump is and has always been

They're naive, credulous children, for the most part

@FinchHaven @NBCNews @abcnews The problem is that Europe is either afraid or reluctant to fully rely on itself. It can and should, but relying on someone else with more money and power to do the heavy lifting is easier. That might seem practical, but the reality has changed, and the path of least resistance doesn't work any more. Trump has won this Greenland round, if not the whole race.

Has Europe already forgotten all the mad men it has spawned across the millennia?
