More Software Alternatives
Earlier this week, I posted an article about European alternatives to software and services we normally use from American sources. As Mastodon user “blurk” informed me, not all options on the list are true alternatives as Spotify is one of the choices, the same Spotify which hosts Joe Rogan and, until recently, featured advertisements for ICE.
Fortunately, there are other lists of software alternatives we can refer to.
The first one I’ve actually referred to prior to…ALL OF THIS. Privacy Tools is a site established in 2015, after Edward Snowden released what he discovered about the NSA here in the USA. The software and services featured on the site are selected with a strict criteria, including, but not limited to:
- Open Source
- Cross-Platform
- Security Audits
You know who’s not on their list? Spotify.
Another list, which I’ve recently discovered, is hosted and maintained by Mastodon user “shellsharks“. Their list focuses on “de-corporatization” the software and services we use, which fits with my plan to leave Big Tech (Microsoft and Meta down, Apple next).
You can find the list here.
One thing both of these lists has in common are multiple Fediverse services. I’ve already mentioned two Mastodon users, but there is also Pixelfed, Lemmy, PeerTube, and others federated and decentralized options out there, all excellent alternatives to what tech corporations offer.
