Q8. It's photo time. Do you have any end-of-January photos, cycling related or not, to share from the past week? Tell us about it!

A8. After finishing my srstionarynride and the gym yesterday we walked out and spotted this fellow sleeping on the grate. He promptly woke up when I mentioned to my wife he was there. Didn't move but we didn't close the distance (about 4 ft) and asked them to stay safe.

@ascentale @bikenite A8 #BikeNite Here's one from this morning having camped midway through a tough MTB overnighter. There'd been plenty of rain overnight, which had eased off, leaving some at-times atmospeheric cloud moving though.

Tents surrounding a post with bikes stood against it, infront of trees and a cloud-topped fell.

This is just a photo from the main street of my suburb in Adelaide, South Australia. It does show how well Australians do public spaces.

@ascentale #bikenite A8: one more January photo from Down Under :-)

A cold, foamy glass of beer standing on a railing overlooking a beautiful coastline and beach. The day is bright but overcast, the beer is a hazy IPA, everything is blurry and washed out and 110-film-esque but that's mostly because the phone camera lens is filthy.

I found some similar ones part of the way up the north side of the Col du Galibier (the sheets of metal on top are angled inwards to deflect any thrown rubbish into the bin):

A waste bin at the side of the road on the north side of the Col du Galibier. The bin is a large cuboid, with metal plates on the top at the rear and right hand side. The metal plates are angled slightly inwards to deflect any rubbish downwards into the bin. The bin is covered by wooden sheets to make it less obtrusive. There is a sign on the nearest side of the bin which gives information on how far it is to the next bin.

@ascentale @bikenite Q8. Rode past Ely cathedral this week. It's nice you can coast to a stop right outside the entrance on your bike.

Large and hard to miss since 1083! Very grey day and not a great photograph, but the cathedral doesn't really need any help from me with looking impressive.

@ascentale @bikenite A8. I always have trouble getting these shots in time, but I have not seen any bakfiets or longbikes for family riding here. I've only seen bicycles that have baby seats or that have a pad added on top of a rear rack or other modifications to the standard upright bike.

It's not an uncommon sight to see parents & children or even two school chums riding the same bike. #Albania #BikeNite

Cycling older person and child viewed as they cycle away on a polished stone path near Skanderbeg Square. They're both dressed warmly for winter. The child is probably about 10 or 11. They're seated on the rear rack, which has been modified with a red padded seat back and presumably a seat cushion. The bike has fenders. The path has composite stone benches dotted along it and as it's near the Mediterranean, many of the plants are still green.

@ascentale @bikenite I actually went to the Selectboard meeting on my bicycle after the storm, which turned out to be a super bad idea, since for the first time in my memory, the roads actually weren't completely cleared. I understand there's a major road salt shortage in New England. I had to go super slow on my summer tires to avoid crashing, and it was so cold on the way back (I think maybe like -1°F) that I had to stop a few times and warm my hands to prevent frostbite--on a 1.5 mile ride!

First time on the bike since our SUnday 7 inches. We haven't reached 20 degrees F since then even in the heat of the day, so everything gets packed down and oh, sidewalks are cleared except ... where people plow from the streets.
I rode a whole 0.7 miles to my friend's house and then wrapped around the block to pick up some brews and decided that NO, I'm not going to do the ride tomorrow... what with housemate's shattered ankle, I'm being extra careful. IT's just too easy to really mess things up on ice and snow. There are other ways to build solidarity and make change... But I ***May*** go out there and shove that stupid blockage out into the street, where there is a major sheet of ice already.

sidwalk that is cleared until a driveway where street plowed snow is in a huge impassable pile, and there's more cleared sidewalk just past it.

We got a lot of snow in that big storm so trails have to be repacked. Getting a foot of powdery snow to pack in below freezing temps isn’t easy. For my part two days of stomping with snowshoes and one day “tire packing” and testing some grooming.

@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A8 an annual camping getaway with friends to Bright in NE Victoria, some of used to ride the Alpine Classic event but it folded (as so many others do, hugely rising costs & reliance on a decreasing pool of volunteers). Now we camp, drink, eat, hike, ride

Last Sunday I rode up Mt Buffalo with four other - faster - riders, took the photo at The Chalet lookout, had a coffee, rode back down (wheeee!), a beer at Porepunkah, back to Bright, a salad roll, then by myself out to Wandiligong and back to stretch out my legs

@ascentale @bikenite A8: So I misplaced my pocket bike tool that lives on my bike and even though I knew _for sure_ that I would find it (and was correct, I have), I went looking at the LBS for a second one and Bothell Ski and Bike had this fucken adorable little all-metal set and as soon as I figured out that the weird smooth rectangle was for my PEDAL CRANKS I was all

GOTTA HAVE IT

so now I do :D

my new little bike multitool, super flat, with one side of bits rotated out for visibility and the other stowed away. It's smaller than a credit card tho' obviously much thicker at 10mm

@genex @ascentale @bikenite it feels way better in the hand than you might think, too

i mean, it's no moulded comfort grip but it's good.

@ascentale @bikenite Anyway this one now goes with me and the older, bigger one I still like stays home as a home tool.
