So, what do I do? Stick to my guns and have no chance for a social life, or capitulate to the conniving, capricious capitalistic caper?

@rl_dane you need to start emailing people you have met at past events, to manually ask them how they are doing lately, what other events they know of, and if they want to grab a cup of coffee. there is no other way
