In the end, I believe that political positioning is driven by affective disposition & psychology & then we come along later & try to overlay ideological categories on it. Which, fine. But it's the affective dispositions doing the causal work, not philosophical superstructures or issue positions.

And I think this is the source of an enormous amount of confusion in politics. Political operators use ideology and issue positions as their interpretive framework, but 99% of people simply don't. If you want to understand or predict, you need to get beneath ideological taxonomies.
