@tankgrrl I'm reading a history of the Underground Railroad, and the whole secret police/extrajudical system was put in place to maintain the institution of slavery, even in places that had banned owning slaves (the enslavers would roll up like ICE in places like NYC, kidnap free Black people, and drag them in front of a Southern-bought judge.)
It's not Stassi, it's Slave Patrols.
And the whole culture of slavery was reactionary and gender essentialist as fuck, which which is why christian men in the US scream and threaten trans folks. We remind them that their faith is garbage.
@dave @tankgrrl I mean, one could argue this came out of The Reconquista (as the Inquisition was an institution doing much of what Slave Patrols did, but targeting Muslim and Jewish people) crossbreeding with Calvinism.
After all, religion, at its core, is a lie people tell themselves to justify who they rape, enslave, and kill.
