There was a pretty critical news segment by Nieuwsuur about @landesregierung 's move to open source alternatives. It shows a Higher Court user having issues with LibreOffice vs Microsoft Office, and using a scanner workaround. Also the email migration didn't go without issue.

To someone who has done this migration before; jup sounds familiar. But it's also something that can be solved. We're actually visiting SH next week to learn about their #opensource experience.

@Gina @landesregierung @neil fun fact. In my view, the biggest issue with migration / cross platform editing for lawyers is 200 page contracts in Microsoft Word with cumulative track changes and cross referenced clause numbers. It’s the defacto standard for contract negotiation.

@imclaren @Gina @landesregierung

I have been fighting recently with an auto-numbering issue with a Word doc.

Not using LibreOffice (which, in my experience, works fine!), but using Microsoft's hosted version of Word.

My client uses Word on their computer. It shows one set of autonumbers.

I am using Microsoft's web interface, with the same document. It shows a different set of autonumbers.

We were rather baffled...

@neil @Gina @landesregierung yes, last I checked the MacOS version of word has the same issue. The only way to be sure of compatibility is to use Word on Windows.

@landesregierung @Gina "I've been working with this one tool for 20 years and have learned to circumnavigate some of its bugs" type of problem.

Sure, a new tool will require you to unlearn some things and learn some new things. Just like you did when you moved to word and outlook all those years back.

@Gina @landesregierung I haven’t seen the piece so I’ll try to be mild, but journalism these days seeks controversy.

There is *no* migration without issues, yet big tech alternatives seem to be held to a higher standard.

@landesregierung @photovince and at the same time our expectations of big tech migrations are so much lower. How many failed SAP migrations have we seen by now?

@Gina @landesregierung and let’s stretch that argument to cost…

Just now read an article about how sudo is maintained by a single person, unpaid. The government is shovelling billions to Big Tech yet open source is “free”. We must kill that argument now before it’s too late 🔪

@Gina @landesregierung @neil Been doing corporate IT for around 25 years now (don’t I sound old), and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a rollout of anything happen without a bunch of technical or business process issues.

Even something as simple as version upgrades to existing software rarely go completely smoothly.

So to get from one ecosystem to another without it all going horribly wrong is a win in my book 👍🥳

Quite - this is not a "FOSS" thing, but a "change" thing.

Yes and that's why we should stop using Microsoft in schools.

When Microsoft gives its software to schools for (almost) free, it’s not charity. They try to lock users in for life.
Microsoft operates just like drugsdealers.

I think that several schools have got this message.

They are using Google Docs instead...

I think this newsitem is very dubious. The workflow of this civil servant with his scanning, conversion to pdf, printing etc is a scene from a bad movie

@landesregierung @PietervdP yeah and could easily be solved. Feels more like a user adoption issue than an actual technical issue. Printing and scanning always worked fine for us (big corporate HP printers, never get the small HP printers).
