I am aware I could probably get those windows plugins working again with a bit of wine + yabridge fiddling but want to take this opportunity to move towards more linux native plugins/synths.

@enoent You could check out https://audiomodern.com/soundbox/ ... there are two free libraries on the same site, plus paid libraries from AudioModern and two third party providers (do a web search).
And have you considered soundfonts? There are thousands of free options covering all the bases, and I can recommend https://www.tx16wx.com/ which I'm using as a VST on Reaper in Linux Mint 22.3. It seems to play every soundfont I throw at it.
@enoent I guess you've had a look at similar pages : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio/PackageList , phasex not in the list but worth having a look (or an ear)
yeah I should have looked at this - got a few new ones installed to try out. Phasex seems to have a lot of presets available but I doubt I will be able to build it on a recent OS.
@enoent AFAIK apt-get install phasex still does the job ??
not for me on ubuntu 26.04 - same with freebirth.
@enoent freebirth at least has an alternative : https://midilab.co/jc303/
excellent, I'll download that for sure

ok that wasn't so bad, there's an issue here with yabridge:
https://github.com/robbert-vdh/yabridge/issues/409
I downloaded the fixed version and ran yabridgectl sync and it was all ok. YMMV
$ wine --version
