About a year ago we setup our own Mastodon instance
Our team is not highly technical, but with Masto.host we were able to do it fairly easy – we may even self host eventually (TBD on that)
We have not regretted the decision, because even though Big Tech's social media apps & platforms can be hard to leave, they have only gotten worse in the last 12 months
Meta/FB/Instagram are over run with fake profiles, bots and #AISlop, TikTok is now suppressing our content, etc.
At the end of the day, if billionaires control hidden algorithms, turn access on/off, and use social media platforms to shape public opinion in service of making extreme profits... we all lose.
Grocery costs, rent/housing, healthcare premiums, utility bills, it's all going up.
But it's a great time to be wealthy & well connected...if you are in the corruption game and can call/text one of the 11+ billionaires that Trump appointed, it's a dream come true.
Building social media outside of the billionaires is worth it, full stop.
At the very least, we have a chance to connect genuinely with each other & try to work on things that matter in our communities...
We are going to keep investing in being part of the #Fediverse, and we are grateful to the many people who are building it
