@ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite A7 #BikeNite It's just enduro, surely? Timed stages with transitions between.

In the UK The Racing Collective put on events where particular segments are timed to produce a winner. The only one I entered was cancelled due to Covid back in 2020.
I think another group, the name escapes me, do similar in Wales.
@ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite A7 - not quite the same but there is the British Cycling Quest:
@InkySchwartz @bikenite A7. I'd done a little bit of randonneuring and at each waypoint (usually a store or cafe), you were supposed to purchase something and save the receipt as proof that you visited.
@InkySchwartz @bikenite @ascentale yeah I didn't think of this first when Insaw the question, but this aligns with "vintage" car rallies around here - no 4 wheel drifts through gravel corners, just a gentle potter around the countryside! #BikeNite

#PostOfTheWeek (season 3):
Rallying is a wide-ranging form of motorsport with various competitive motoring elements such as speed tests (sometimes called "rally racing" in United States), navigation tests, or the ability to reach waypoints or a destination at a prescribed time or average speed. Rallies may be short in the form of trials at a single venue, or several thousand miles long in an extreme endurance rally.
@ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite A7. Alleycats? Radonneuring is similar, but in my head I imagine them more as a challenge than a race per se. Alleycats are probably more like illegal street racing, though.
@edd @ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite
A7. I'd like a slow non-competitive Alley Cat. #coffeeneuring is kind of like that, I guess?
@cainmark @ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite Yea, the closest I know of. #coffeeneuring is a little more freeform and individual than what you'd expect of radonneuring (and rallying, to my very limited understanding), but it scratches the exploration itch I get.
@ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite A7. #BikeNite Enduro mountain biking is similar, where there are timed downhill stages and then neutral stages to get to the top of the next stage. It would be interesting to have a non-downhill version of it. I've ridden some enduro trails and have had to walk a few sections. They are a little beyond my skill or confidence level.

Someone mentioned a scavenger hunt. We recently had our annual youth MTB team scavenger hunt. Fun event. We are told the location of check points that we have to visit. Each check point is worth a certain number of points. We plan a route that earns us the most points in the allotted 3 hours time limit. It is a little tricky because you want to challenge the kids without making them miserable. The kids get into it, though, so it is usually a great workout for them.
@ascentale @cmgrowell @bikenite @InkySchwartz Your 'scavenger hunt' event sounds like a MTB Rogaine, which is a type of orienteering where you collect as many points from a map full of control points as you can, within a fixed time. Great fun!
@ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite isn’t that just Cyclecross?
@c_dan4th @ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite
Cyclocross is the equivalent of the special stage.
They could actually do an eve closer Equiv (IE follow the inappropriate kit ethos) . Rally cars are iirc based on presently sold road cars - they could insist on one special stage being done in showroom bought consumer versions of the monsters they drive .
It would be hilarious and really showcase the awesome skills of the drivers / navigators
@ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite
A7. I did a gimmick rally once (in a car, separate driver & navigator) and it was a real hoot. I'd love to try something like that on a bike, though the instructions would have to be simple enough that you could remember them and not have to keep referring to them while riding. You could maybe make it like a scavenger hunt. If anybody tries this, I want to hear details.
@akkana @ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite #bikenite we've had "poker rallies" on the bike where you ride to a destination and draw a playing card... get togehter after the 5 stops and see who's got the best hand.
We've done pub crawls. My "first ride with the fast group" came the Monday after going out w/ somebody and planning said roiute, so YES me the NEWBIE could say as they approached an intersection and were like "okay how far is it if we..." and I could say "3 miles down to where we turn!" for INSTANT CRED (that would not have been there the week before or, probably, the week after) :)
@geonz @akkana @ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite
A7. I like the idea of poker card collecting. I would say Magic the Gathering or Pokémon cards could work too, if not for the rate of crimes they're involved with now. So weird.
@cainmark @geonz @akkana @ascentale @bikenite Wait, crimes with Magic and Pokemon cards? And not just theft of them I guess.
@InkySchwartz @geonz @akkana @ascentale @bikenite
Major gambling crimes and theft. Large thefts.
@ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite A7: Randoneurring? I'd love to do whatever the rando equivalent of a gimmick rally is (you get cryptic route instructions instead of clear incremental directions) but I'd either have to travel to one or host one myself here.
@josh @ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite
There is a big race in a forest north of Paris that fits the bill. Will dig out details
@ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite #BikeNite A7 I've seen events where you're given a set of checkpoints (sometimes even with semi-cryptic clues to id them) and its up to you to get between them and stamp a card, #MelburnRoobaix of note, but MTB ones as well

I love the person on FB who does "coffeenuering" where we share pics of our rides to get coffee 😉 (or tea, or...) #bikenite
@geonz @ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite the annual #coffeeneuring challenge is much fun, big thumbs up to chasingmailboxes for organising it each year
