(06/13/1980) · The Drafting and Enactment of the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act: April - October 1980

This website hosts archival research performed on the drafting and enactment of the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act, a federal law which settled the land claims brought forth by two tribes located in Maine in the 1970s.

The research was sponsored by the Maine Indian Tribal State Commission and performed by Suffolk University Law School.

The focus on the research was for the April 1980 to September 1980 period and paid particular attention to gathering information regarding the formulation of the following sections and references to:
• Sec. 1723 focusing on the treaties;
• Sustenance and protected sustenance practices,
• Definition of internal tribal matters, and
• Sec. 1735b of MICSA.
