Historically there was a pendulum swinging back and forth between #client and #server in the distribution of computing power, with the era of #UNIX workstations maybe the peak of desktop computing. With the "cloudification" of commercial desktop OS's and more so with the emergence of #mobile, the shift to servers was intense. Now the immense "AI" datacenters investments by #bigtech are ushering what seems a terminally hypercentralized model. Not clear what dynamic might provide counterforce.

Conceptually, for a democratic society that respects its citizens and grants them #digitalprivacy and agency ( #digitalsovereignty) we need to envision computing power becoming again more distributed. But neither the architecture that would achieve that, nor the economic forces that would make it happen are obvious. We have been travelling down the wrong path for so long, it is now difficult to discern alternatives. Yet the shape of digital society is really a matter of collective choice.
