@flaki he’s a Puerto Rican mega celeb, first Latin American solo musician at the game no one else cares about, this made Trump angry, they organized a counter concert featuring Kid Rock, which was bad, and even tho I’m not a fan of that style of music Bad Bunny is an incredible showman and he had a great message of unity and humanity. He also let many Latin Americans feel seen, with the set and design and everything that was going on, the dancing was amazing, so was the camerawork, and at the end he dedicated it to America: all of it (listed all the countries of the Americas.. somehow missed Suriname and Belize). It was a joyful message that I specifically needed right now. It was also entirely in Spanish, which made some people very angry.
@skinnylatte gosh this sounds amazing, and is sure some is something uplifting we all need to persevere in this dark timeline 💜
@flaki @skinnylatte the last couple of Superbowl halftimes have really made ol' Trump really mad.
Kendrick Lamar had Samuel L. Jackson emcee his performance last year, and Trump really, really, really hates Samuel L. Jackson (hence why Lamar invited him.)
Trump pitched a fit and left the game early. He didn't bother to attend this year's, even though the Patriot's ownership have been long time supporters of Trump.
@flaki he's from Puerto Rico (a US territory) and sings almost exclusively in Spanish. He's also really popular, and a US citizen.
However, the fascists and slave catchers in control of the country don't consider him to be a citizen, and are very freaked out about it, and the singing in Spanish (oh gods, they are freaked out about the singing in Spanish.)
But the Superbowl organizers have been bringing in very popular musical acts to do the half time for years because more people will watch their favorite artists, even if bracketed by a boring american rules football game, than just the boring football game.
@emma aw yeah!
I know the Superbowl halftime show has been a Big F Deal™, my white European a$$ had no clue who's Bad Bunny tho, now it does, rad. TY.
(I *do* have some Puerto Rican friends so I'm sadly painfully aware how much of a big deal this is)
@flaki and the half time show was great! It's up on YouTube, at least in the US, so I was able to watch it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6FuWd4wNd8 (I was watching #Monsterdon while the Super Bowl was on.)
@flaki the fascists and slave catchers are so upset that they ran their own alternative halftime show, sponsored by the org which was ran by horrible nazi who was shot through the neck last year, featuring a has-been white guy who has made a career of being the go to artist for fascists and slave catchers (nobody but the slave catchers watched it.)
@flaki so the big deal is mainly the 30% of the US who have convinced themselves that the problem is not billionaires, but immigrants, and see Bad Bunny, a US Citizen, as part of the problem.
There's a word for those people, but I promised to stop using ableist language here.
