I love the idea of #CityStrides, which is basically a game where you try to "run" all the streets in your "city" and compete against everyone else doing likewise.

But because the US concept of cities doesn't really map on to the haphazard nature of administrative boundaries in the UK, our "city" is actually an entire county with many towns and villages and miles upon miles of rural country road.

Couple that with the fact that we walk instead of running, and it's going to take us a while!

So in the meantime we spend most Sunday mornings driving out to some small town and walking as much of it as possible in one go before my leg starts to complain.

Makes for some weird route maps! 馃槃

#Walking

Street map of a small place called "New Marske". The entire left side of the town is covered in a squiggly blue route map showing where we walked into every nook and cranny and cul-de-sac. Yes it gets us some funny looks from residents.

@z3z It's so satisfying watching the map fill in bit by bit! :D

@thegiddystitcher A couple of years ago I set myself the challenge of walking All The Streets in our tiny town. It took me to parts of town that I'd never visited before, despite having lived here for more than 40 years.

@Dewines Yes that's definitely the best part! We're almost done with our actual town, but recently realised there's a tiny little cul-de-sac about a minute away from our house that we've never been into.

And we often go on long walks to the next village over, but have somehow never walked up one particular road despite crossing over the bottom of it about a hundred times. So excited to see what's up there! :D

@thegiddystitcher I don't use any of the services that city stride connects to but now I'm thinking about whether it would be possible to pull data from apple health to get the routes of all the walking, running, and cycling workouts I've tracked on my apple watch to build a similar map

@olivvybee You probably could, and I'm usually very enthusiastic about large and unnecessary coding projects, but in this case it might just be easier to get a free Strava account 馃槈

@thegiddystitcher Ah but then I'm missing out on the parts of the map I've already covered, and I have to remember to use strava to track things instead of the built in workout app...

@olivvybee Idk about Apple watches but with mine it just automatically syncs over to Strava and then over to CS with no manual intervention on my part.

I *think* it pulled in historical data when we first started too, but not sure about that part.

Cycling activities would probably get ignored though, I think there's a similar one called Wandrer or similar for cyclists but then maybe they exclude on foot activities...

Oh whatever, have fun making your map :D
