The perception of #Matrix chat on the Fedi seems to be somewhat divided, and I’ve never really understood why beyond the on boarding process?

I've been using it for a group chat for people here on the Fedi for a couple of years now and I’ve never had any big issues with it.

What do you consider a better group chat and why? I want to learn.

@Mrfunkedude Aside from encryption instability (which greatly varies between people), there's a lack of moderation tools for communities (Draupnir exists but not everyone knows about it, and it has its limits). There's also some animosity from the leadership. But still I'd say Matrix is a fair alternative to Discord.

@Mrfunkedude Same. I hosed my personal server after about 4 years because I am dumb and didn't make a backup before upgrading. Aside from that it was less drama than any other chat program I've used for that long.

The people I see who have a bad experience are on huge servers with hundreds of people and relay bridges to every chat protocol ever made.

Matrix is a good modern chat platform but it's no *lingua franca*

If you want the e2e encryption it can be quite a pain with key syncs and all. I've seen it cause issues when switching clients and people keep getting decryption errors on messages.
Signal is easier when it comes down to it, but you can't self host that, of course.

For general group chats, matrix is probably fine, but e2e is not enforced in group chats, and due to key management, is probably best avoided. I've been running a matrix server for a while, and moderation, safety and trust tools are severely lacking. It's not a terrible system, it's just kinda half-baked with a bunch of compromises built in.

@steff that’s a well thought out response. Thank you.

Would you have any suggestions for something better in your eyes?

Honestly, I'm still looking. Both xmpp and irc work but require a bunch of overlays to be modern. Everything I've seen has been like this: different components cobbled together to get modern features like spaces, audio, and video support.

@steff I have interest from other people in my life that are looking for replacements for Discord. They need more than what matrix can provide, so I haven’t suggested that.

And I’ve suggested to them to try to stay away from corporate chat because they’ll eventually have the same issue that Discord is having.

But there’s just nothing out there that ticks all the boxes yet.

For an alternative group chat, I can strongly recommend Delta.Chat (smartphone and desktop app).

Developed in Germany, with a strong hold on E2E-encryption, and it even offers "applets", like collaboratively working on documents, polls, todo-lists, and many more.

It does not, however offer channels (maybe not yet).

@fasnix @steff i’m trying out Delta right now. Seems interesting. I get that you like it, but what would you say is its biggest downside?
