I'm looking for advice on migrating away from Mailchimp, and using Ghost instead. There's a nice fella in Germany that someone here mentioned recently who offers a fully maintained Ghost setup at very fair prices.

But when I search this topic all I get is tech outlines on how to move the list from one system to another. I already have a website and a blog on my own server. Still trying to get my head around how best to setup Ghost just for the purpose of a mailing list.

It's conceptual not technical. I want to envisage how this might look before I get too far down the road.

@ewen I guess that was me. The fella is @jannis from Austria and he does an excellent job. His company is https://www.magicpages.co?aff=29C4U1fWqXc7 (with my sexy affiliate)

Best: ask him.

From what I think: Ghost is basically everything together. You can use it for mailing only, but you can't get rid of the other parts. But that honestly doesn't matter. It's then just a starting page that handles your mailing list archive (if the mailing list is public), if that makes sense?

Feel free to chat. I'm here.

@sturmsucht @jannis

Yes Jannis emailed back right away. Have already sent his details to a few friends who are either already on Ghost or about to start a new website.

I think the conceptual framework I need is that Ghost is a blogging platform that integrates the email 100%. And I only need the email part. I am not a poweruser on Mailchimp, I don't have funnels and flows and journeys etc. I suspect I am very very typical in this regard.

I like the idea of paying 1500NOK a year to host the mailing list, instead of the slippery slope for Mailchimp's pricing, where a little but of success might ruin you!

So I'm thinking about a framework where I write a blog post on Ghost about what's new this month. Like a journal if you will. The actual content will remain on my existing blog, but I link back to those articles and my videos and whatever else. The key will be to setup a subdomain just for the Ghost instance. Over time I'll end up with a collection of past journal entries, which is kinda nice. More work than I wanted, but not pointless work.

@ewen

Sounds good. I know a bunch of people that uses Ghost for blogging, but it's newsletter feature just for monthly recaps. In your case you would just link to an outside blog.

Looking forward to your journal!

What Chris said.

For a mailing list itself, Ghost might be overkill, since you cannot get rid of the website/blog part. You can, however, make it a really nice newsletter archive with (free) themes like these:

https://ghost.org/themes/bulletin/
https://ghost.org/themes/dawn/

You could run that under newsletter.yourdomain.com or something similar.
