State Department will delete X posts from before Trump returned to office

The State Department is removing all posts on its public accounts on the social platform X made before President Trump returned to office on Jan. 20, 2025.

The posts will be internally archived but will no longer be on public view. Staff members were told anyone wanting to see older posts will have to file a Freedom of Information Act request

@gtbarry surely someone somewhere must have them logged right?

@donamasta State Department claims they will archive them and any US citizen can file a FOIA to view the specific ones they request. But, yes, all social media posts exist in perpetuity and you don't have to file paperwork to access them

@donamasta if you want to assume the government works the way it is supposed to, you can search the National Archives (https://archivesfoundation.org/)

The four years they are "erasing" exist here: https://2021-2025.state.gov/

or the Wayback Machine might be of use: https://web.archive.org/
