Some nights, the aurora doesn’t just glow. It takes over the entire northern sky.

On very active evenings, the boreal forest feels small. The trees become silhouettes under something vast and constantly moving.

That’s why I’ve always liked this image. It lives in my “Forest” gallery, where interior Alaska trees meet the big sky.

Bright green aurora borealis fills the entire night sky in sweeping arcs and curtains above a dark boreal forest in interior Alaska. Tall, leafless birch trees and several narrow spruce trees rise as black silhouettes from the bottom and left edges of the frame, their branches reaching upward toward the light. The aurora forms layered bands and soft vertical rays, with brighter concentrated patches near the center and right side of the sky. Faint stars are visible between the green light, and a small streak of light appears on the right side of the sky.
