@foobarth getting rid of Big Tech has been a big driver for me - and of course autonomy of data. Getting an OS where I don't need a user in a centralized network, to be able to just use my computer.
For a long time I wasn't really sure it would work in the end, but the seup I have now with CachyOS and Bitwig has suprised me so much. It really is a question of doing it, and seing everything I can't do as creative input.
@mosgaard Sure you already answered that, but what laptop are you using for your pro audio work?
@foobarth I bought a 500 euro test machine, a second hand Lenovo from a local guy refurbishing computers for companies.
It's a ThinkPad P15s Gen 1, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10510U (8) @ 4.90 GHz with a combined GPU (Intel UHD and NVIDIA P520) and 32 GB of ram.
But I really want to get a more quiet laptop, for when doing site specific work. For that I'll be looking at @tuxedocomputers
@foobarth I should mention I also have a beast of a Macbook with an M1 Pro processor I have been using with my UAD setup.
The Macbook is used in the theatre I'm part of for lights, so it's locked for that purpose for now. I just really want to use Linux, and I actually didn't expect I could do everything I do on my current laptop.
@mosgaard From reading your website, it seems we're sitting in the same boat more or less. My current driver is also an M1 Pro but i really want to get rid of #BigTech as far as possible.
I'm currently considering a recent Lenovo IdeaPad with a Ryzen AI CPU, heard lots of good things regarding Linux support.
