RE: https://mastodon.social/@eribosot/116118964480739779

This is the kind of either oblivious or bad-faith argument you're going to encounter at least once every single time you point to a top-heavy systemic problem.

It's like saying that an elephant & an ant share the blame if a bridge collapses while they're both on it - except the ant is sitting on the elephant & had no say in the decision of walking onto the bridge in the first place.

"Vote with your wallet/feet" against systemic problems is a fallacy, but billionaires LOVE it!

@jwcph

My argument is not that ordinary people should do more to combat climate change. We're doing plenty, and whatever oil executives do is massively exacerbating the problem.

Rather, my argument is that the problem is far more systemic, that it goes beyond a few dozen rich assholes. Saying that a busload of people are causing this problem falsely implies that getting rid of those people will fix the problem, and it won't. I would really like it to be true, but it isn't.

@eribosot Firstly, I fucking guarantee that if this busload of people were held proportionally responsible, this issue would change overnight. You're quite simply wrong.

Also, you do understand that We™️ are saying "Somebody is overwhelmingly responsible for these problems & we know who they are" & your response is "Actually, no they aren't & no we don't", right?

Would you care to explain how that contributes to anything - e.g. this conversation, or indeed solving the problems?

@jwcph

What do you mean by "held proportionally responsible" --what do you want to happen? Should they dismantle their oil companies? Go to jail? Get a humongous fine?

Knowing who the culprits are and making them pay for what they did are two vastly different things. Tooting about that definitely doesn't contribute to anything.

The problem is systemic, the solution must be systematic, so top-down, not bottom-up. Politics, flawed and boring as it is, is the only force that can stop this.

@eribosot How convenient - so you don't have to take responsibility for anything, not even an opinion. You must be very proud.
