I can't help but ask myself if Canada, with its openly hostile position towards Jews in Ontario and Quebec, is really a long term home. Have I traded safety from the US's madness for the right to pay more taxes, live in fear as an immigrant, all while my host nation seethes at my existence?
Is the perceived safety here merely a byproduct, not of acceptance, but of invisibility and Canadian politeness?
And if so, is it better to live in relative hiding here- as my wife insists, to not display a mezzuzah on our door, or display our Jewishness outside, or to trade that in for a different kind of battle, one where money makes for safety in South America, or trading in the quiet hatred experienced here in Canada for the noise and chaos of Israel?
