@alice I presume this is really just a white label generic lock?
@michaelgemar they're a big enough company that they might have their own small factory that churns them out. Or more likely, they contract with the same company that makes the same type of branded lock for all the storage lockers, semi trailers, etc.
@alice I used to work at U-Haul.
I probably wrote-off a hundred of those locks to give to storage customers who were angry about having to buy one.
We hated them so much, because any other lock we could cut off in half a second.
Those locks, not only could we not cut them off but they were also really tricky to drill.
@steven so, they were kinda doing their job then 😋
@alice
I needed self-storage for a couple of months, and the place (not U-Haul, but doesn't matter) required me to purchase one of these to secure my space.
I assume it was because they only needed one master key for when I defaulted.
Flimsy piece of junk. I still have it, for some stupid reason.
@RealGene yeah, when I used a storage place they did the same thing. I threw their lock into my collection and put a better one on.
@503bartley I used an unbranded tubular lock and an American 1100 series. Nothing so fancy as to invite curiosity, but more trouble together than an unmarked storage locker is likely to be worth.
@alice What does it take to pick a discus lock? I have a bunch in my collection but haven't managed to get any of them open.
@drwho are you thinking discus (diskus) lock like this, or disc-detainer (disc-tumbler) lock like an Abloy Protec?
The terms are similar, but the lock types are very different.
@alice The lock you are holding in the above picture.
I tried a few ways it's phrasing it to avoid just this kind of ambiguity - didn't work. Sorry.
@drwho ah. Well, because of the design, they can take significant turning force to rotate the core, which means binding and counter-rotation (in ones with spools) can be tricky.
Though, because the shackle interacts directly with the core, you can sometimes pick them without a turning tool by just pulling the shackle towards one side to cause binding and then use a pick.
They're just pin-tumbler locks, normally 4-pin, sometimes 5. Some have spools, but you'd be lucky to find any that have anything fancier than that.
"Top of the keyway" tensioning can make it easier to rotate the core precisely while also leaving enough room for a sturdy pick to bully the pins with.
Very pick resistant to Peeps
@w_b "those lil marshmallowy bastards wouldn't stand a chance against our steel!"
It is U-Haul and designed to offer minimal resistance for lesbians, and those women or AFAB embies who love women 😈
@alice This is like the countdown to eyaculate xD
@alice The less secure ones have disc locks for minimum jiggling resistance.
@alice lol keyway so wide you could drive through with a truck.
@er4z0r I actually had to use "top of the keyway" rotation, because it's a relatively short keyway, and the pins are long, so a turning tool and pick are hard to fit with room still left to work.
@alice I hear ya. My current focus are small size German padlocks as that's what I'm most likely to encounter on a job (I live in Germany). The problem there becomes: My TOK tensioners are too deep so they tend to touch the first pin causing trouble. I generally wonder if I want a better assortment of tensioners
@er4z0r IME touching the first pin isn't big a deal, as long as I know it's a thing and don't mistake it for binding. But, that said, I rarely use TOK unless it's necessary, as (especially with love locks) accidentally popping your prybar out and off a bridge sucks.
@alice Easily drilled out... There is even a jig from the manufacturer for it, complete with bit, which wears out fairly fast.
@sasutina13 that seems like massive overkill for a lock that's so easy to pick.
@alice Indeed. Some people are massive killjoys.
@sasutina13 I'm more worried about the lock murder! Poor things 🥺
@alice Were they even mushroom or otherwise pick-resistant pins?
@alice I assume it's a typo - "Maximum resistance to pickling". Put that baby in vinegar for 6 months and they guarantee it won't be a pickle by end of it. It'll still just be a disappointing lock.
@Fruan you might be on to something.
Of perhaps it's "Maximum resistance to licking"? You'll never make it to the Tootsie roll core.
@mangled_pixel Blue paint just washes right off it.
@eedly @mangled_pixel @alice @Fruan But it's tripping the whole time.
@alice I don’t particularly want to test that idea, which I guess means the lock does indeed have lick resistance.
@alice If we were friends IRL you'll be so easy to buy gifts for. Every Christmas and birthday, another lock.
But then you'll be like my kids and only play with your new 'toy' for 20 seconds! 😀
@alice
I think the locks you showed me had six. Why would they brag about five?
