In the video, Trump offers to fly the team to the State of the Union address, adding, "I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team — you do know that." Otherwise, he jokes, "I do believe I probably would be impeached.”
In response, all the men laugh. Their level of laughter is upsetting. One man is laughing so hard, so very hard. His laugh is high-pitched; he thinks it’s hilarious. It’s the soundtrack of a thousand humiliations. I’ve watched the video a lot. And each time it’s those laughs that infuriate me.
The American women’s hockey team has more Olympic gold medals than the men. They also won against Canada in overtime. But on that call, they’re reduced to a punchline.
It’s not that our president is making a misogynistic joke that is upsetting. Trump is a misogynist. We know that. And he jokes about it all the time. On a campaign trip in Iowa, he joked about how he couldn’t call a woman hot. She was a small-business owner, and he called her up to talk about his “no tax on tips” law. But he was going to call her hot anyway. And he did.
Earlier this month, he chided CNN's Kaitlan Collins for not smiling. In November, he told Bloomberg’s Catherine Lucey, “Quiet, piggy.” And that’s all just in recent months.
