It’s not that our president is making a misogynistic joke that is upsetting. Trump is a misogynist. We know that. And he jokes about it all the time. On a campaign trip in Iowa, he joked about how he couldn’t call a woman hot. She was a small-business owner, and he called her up to talk about his “no tax on tips” law. But he was going to call her hot anyway. And he did. Earlier this month, he chided CNN's Kaitlan Collins for not smiling. But all of this sexism is a feature, not a bug, for this administration. It’s those around him laughing or staying silent that is infuriating — the casual go along to get along, the bro code of a laugh. Perhaps the locker-room moment wouldn’t have been such a big deal if it hadn’t happened as revelations about the ways in which rich and powerful people worked with Epstein, participated in his sex trafficking ring, or looked away.
