Maybe its just anecdotal but it seems that in previous eras attempts at #opensource mobile, #linuxmobile etc were targeting low end devices, whereas now they seem to be targeting the latest "mainstream".

The most extreme low end effort was maybe the #firefoxos ZTE devices, cute little plasticky things.

The difference can be quite material (> 500 versus < 200 in some monetary units).

No idea what best strategy to reach mass adoption but maybe chasing the giant phone selfie crowd is not it? 馃ぃ

@openrisk Firefox OS reached really low in the device spectrum. The cheapest being the one nicknamed Tarako which was supposed to sell for 25$. It actually sold for a little more but still extremely cheap. This was a 128MB device with a minuscule amount of NAND storage and making stuff like YouTube work on it was a challenge, but we managed. There's some pictures of it here: https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/mozillas-25-firefox-os-its-real-and-it-works/

Mozilla's $25 Firefox OS: It's real, and it works

Relatively affluent people will shun this smartphone. But for people who can afford only a bargain-priced feature phone, Mozilla's prototype shows promise.

@gabrielesvelto I had a ZTE myself. Really a pity this type of low end approach did not take roots (at least in Europe).

I am just thinking out loud, but wondering if at some point the mass psychology of having (and being seen to have) a massive 10-camera phone will start wearing thin.

Might create an opening for low-end devices that are simply tools, not status symbols and lifestyle statements. Long on battery life, high on privacy, low on price, weight and size etc.
