One thing about visiting Berlin from Montreal is the onslaught of English words and phrases on signage and advertising in public spaces. Many signs and posters have only English, no German translation or equivalent. Coming from Quebec, a place with strict language laws, the cultural colonialism is by contrast overwhelming.
@evan I lived briefly in Hamburg some years ago and can confirm this. (Also the subsequent comment about movie dubbing.)
One of my amusing memories was seeing any number of business cargo trucks proudly proclaiming “Made in Germany.”

@evan Something I love about cities is all the shop signs advertising exotic wares in many different languages. I lived in Montréal when the language laws came into effect in the 1970s and I thought changing the sign on The English Bookshop in Westmount to "Le English Bookshop" was profoundly silly.
@evan On the other hand foreign movies get dubbed, so that Germans speak in total speak english way worse than the dutch or scandivaians
I recognize that nationalism is a dangerous tendency.
