@gamingonlinux Here's my take on this as a long time Linux user. This will be a good option for those jumping out of the M$ OS camp. It'll be a simple enough solution for those users. For those of use who utilize a 3rd party tool, such as Lutris, Heroic, or Minigalaxy, this won't be a replacement for us. What I was hoping, was for GOG to be a supporter of these others services, instead of throwing their own hat into an already competitive market.
@gamingonlinux Since the Heroic Launcher works so well, there's really no need for an official Linux port of GOG Galaxy anymore imo

The builds of BaldursGate Enhanced Edition and other native Linux builds are not maintained and have outdated dependencies.
It is good to see them getting back to Linux so this can be officially be reported and has a chance to get fixed.
Also GoG Galaxy has plugin support.
Heroic only does a hand full of store fronts.
While they do not require the original launcher and provide almost the full set of features, people might want to integrate ALL their game content into a single library.

If they actually do it, I'm more likely to purchase through them, but it'd also depend on games actually functioning properly. It's also a lot easier for them to do this now though as they're riding on the back of all of the hard work that Valve and the open source community have done.
But at least it's a step in the right direction.

@ozoned @gamingonlinux I'm not invested in gaming on Linux so I don't know all the details, but does Proton works without Steam? Can GOG just use Proton to do it for their games?

@rejzor@mastodon.social @gamingonlinux@mastodon.social Yup. Proton is built on top of WINE. GloriousEggroll actually has his own version of Proton that lots of folks use. And he, and others, are working on building a unifying layer akin to proton that anyone can use. github.com/Open-Wine-Compone...
So imagine you speak English, someone else speaks French. You need an interpreter. That's what Wine/Proton does.

I have my self-build-steam-machineish in big picture mode (and nearly never keyboard or mouse attached) and all those alternatives like hero do not work THAT well with my dualsense.

@gamingonlinux It's about 15 years too late from their promised schedule, I guess. Also overshadowed by **checks notes** getting called out on blowing nazi dogwhistles and then doubling the fuck down.
I don't think it's right for any conversation about GOG now to happen without mentioning that they did this and pressed the button that said "I am aware and would like to proceed"

@gamingonlinux Neat. Though I'd quite frankly prefer them simply becoming major contributor and sponsor of the Heroic Launcher.
Perhaps with an optional "GOG Galaxy Theme" for the launcher so they could still do brand deals and such. Perhaps installable as an Addon through Flathub, that way they could even point to something in the store.
However as long as GOG Galaxy ends up being Open-Source I'll also take that.

@Natanox I hope Galaxy becomes open source, but I don't see any reason to believe that will happen

@Distante If they do even a little bit of market analysis they'll realise making the Linux version proprietary would be a major mistake. Not to mention any major software store GUI (at least that I know of) highlights if something is proprietary as a warning, so even if the initial bad press goes away the warning won't.

@Natanox I disagree. Steam, Zoom, and DaVinci Resolve are not open source. People install whatever they feel they need
