It is painful enough to make us ask: Where has this war brought us?

Just moments ago, right before our eyes, we witnessed a scene that sent shivers down our spines.

A group of young women were walking nearby when, suddenly, one of them abandoned her little daughter, who appeared to be around a year and a half old. The child appeared to have special needs.

I picked up the little girl and ran after her mother for nearly 300 meters, but her mother did not turn back. She walked away, then told the girl who was with her, “I don’t want her.”

The other girl was the one who took the child from me. She told me that the mother could no longer carry her, and that was why she had left her behind.

I stood there helplessly, unable to comprehend what I had just witnessed, or how a human being can be pushed to such a level of exhaustion and despair.

This happened this afternoon, near the Palestinian Bar Association in Tal al-Hawa, Gaza.

Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal wakeel.

Everyone, if we are no longer able to bear this reality, then let us at least spare children the consequences of our helplessness. Let us think carefully before bringing children into a life we are no longer able to protect them in.

War does not only kill people. Sometimes, it slowly empties a person from within, until they can no longer carry the heaviest thing a mother’s heart could ever carry: her child.
