@bikenite A1. I am in Southeastern Pennsylvania today, and am glad to be spending time with family. It’s been good to see family and be on vacation, as I was going a little crazy in the last few weeks. It’s strange to see reminders of the passage of time and sometimes surprising to see what hasn’t changed and to think about how that compares with my memory.

I was able to take a short ride on a bike in the garage. I had fixed it up a bit each year to make it slightly more rideable, and luckily all it needed was some air in the tires.

Once upon a time, govt officials demonstrated leadership when rumors went viral after crises. They tried to prevent mobs from falsely accusing people, and took authority seriously. Now they pile on. NYT quoted my Substack about rumors and propaganda (🎁 link) www.nytimes.com/2025/12/25/t...

sincere Q for american history experts like @juliaazari.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy : when is the last time the US had an openly reactionary government? not a hyper conservative one. a legit reactionary/counterrevolutionary one that is proud to understand itself as such? is it really as far back as andrew johnson?

From Seoul to Manila, authorities are cracking down on nuisance streamers. Japan, for now, is taking a more lenient path. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2025/12/27/digital/nuisance-streamers-japan-south-korea-phillipines-2025/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #life #digital #livestreaming #youtube #deepfakes #johnnysomali #southkorea

The Japan Times

In 2025, Asia got tough on nuisance streamers. Japan did not.

After years of leniency, Asian countries are imposing serious penalties on transgressive online personalities — with Japan lagging behind.

Welcome to #BikeNite on Friday, December 26th!

Thanks for joining our cycle-related stuff. Answer whenever at your convenience. Anyone can join, now or later. Reply to what you like, and boost for visibility.

Our intro:

Q1. Where are you posting from today? It's a holiday #BikeNite, the last of the year, so it might be a little lighter. Are you somewhere different than usual? How are you doing?

New to dev.phanpy.social as it aligns perfectly with my desire for a high-value, low-distraction posting environment. NGL, I am loving it! OMG, Catchup feature, where have u been all my life.

WHY I adore it: I can select a time range (e.g., the last 8 hours while away) and get a sorted, filtered dashboard of the most important posts I missed, rather than just endlessly scrolling through a chronological firehose. Pure efficiency.

Other faves:
1. Boosts Carousel: Instead of cluttering your main timeline with every re-shared post (boost), Phanpy groups them visually, making the original posts much easier to find.
2. Nested Comments/Threads: makes following conversations much easier by visually nesting replies, which is key for deep engagement and understanding the discussion architecture.
3. Zen-Mode Focus: designed to reduce clutter. Actions like "reply, boost, favourite" are often hidden by default until you focus on a post, encouraging more intentional interaction and less distraction.

The same view seeded the populist right narrative for Brexit, and carries on in the debates about Brexit 2.0, how real Brexit, that properly detaches us from the EU, was never tried.

Had a good Boxing Day.

Picked up Aunty very early so i could do the cooking (didn't want to risk leaving the oven on while i did the taxi service). We watched The Thursday Murder Club (loved it!) while the pork belly slow roasted into deliciousness (thanks Nagi!). And followed lunch with some Queer Eye for the Straight Guy which was just the right kind of light silly joyousness.

I asked a relative for a #BikeNite question:

Q5. Have your pants ever snagged on a gear and torn? Have you had other clothing issues while riding a bike? What happened and how did you fix it?

A5.
I used to have a backpack where one strap was on a hook, not permanently attached. One day that strap came loose while I was riding and fell into the chain, sending me into a fall -- at the corner of the two busiest roads in the village. It was awesome. When I got home I hammered the hook shut.

Hey @Jorg1w, thanks for the follow request! Unfortunately there's not enough vibe on your profile to check, so...

If you could snap your fingers and replace cars with any other existing mode (or two) of transportation—complete with all the infrastructure needed—what would you choose?

*note: it doesn't *have* to be practical.

Since Seattle is hilly and has a big North-South ridge, I'd go for a fast rail down the middle, and hanging gondolas from the train stations down into all the East–West neighborhoods. The rest would be mostly footpaths.

these guys talk about europe - by which they mean the postwar order where the baseline standards of behavior are liberal-democratic, with an emphasis on the rule of law and fundamental rights as opposed to force and domination - the same way that imperialists 100 years ago talked about “the orient”
