There's apparently not going to be a Repair Cafe in my town this month. I look forward to them, so this is a slight bummer.

To cheer myself up tonight, I spent half an hour replacing the corroded battery spring contacts in a $2 kitchen timer, and cleaned up some crappy wiring and soldering inside it while I was in there. Felt productive. Yes, I could have replaced it for $2 - but I like the feeling I get from keeping it out of the landfill and fulfilling a useful purpose.

Your city may have a Repair Cafe, too.

Repair Cafe returns to ring in the new year! Our next event will be Sunday, January 11th, at the City of Fairfax Regional Library. Doors open at 10:30, and we close to new repairs at 12:30pm. Knife sharpening closes at 12:00pm to allow time for cleanup. We'd love to see you there!

Not sure what to bring? Here's some things we've diagnosed and repaired before:

- Lighting fixtures
- Cookware
- Toys
- Jewelry

I've had a few people comment on my builder's trug repair (I saw a guy doing it on a YouTube video) and I've also done the same on a soft plastic laundry basket. So I'm sharing here in the hopes that it saves one going into landfill somewhere. #repaircafe

Difference Makers: #Spokane's #RepairCafé and #MendItCafé reframe relationship with household items

Excerpt: "Two Spokane organizations, which launched independently just months apart, are part of an international movement to help people extend the life of their belongings — and encourage them to buy things with lives worth extending — by repairing them for free and teaching anyone interested how to do those repairs in the future.

"For the most part, the volunteers learned their skills through their careers or, just as frequently, from their parents and grandparents. In a time when fewer and fewer families still have these skills in circulation, the Spokane Repair Café and Mend-It Café provide an answer even for those without money to spend at a repair shop.

The Mend-It Café, specializing in clothes and textiles, launched in May 2023 with its first mending event hosted in partnership with #ArtSalvage and #SpokaneZeroWaste. That latter organization's executive director, Elyse Hochstadt, started Spokane Zero Waste to help address, as the name suggests, a local waste stream choked with cheap disposables that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions."
